Here's that front border of mine which was looking rather feeble a few weeks back. Compost, water and sunshine have made quite a difference!

I love flowers... patches of colour in what can be a brown and dry-looking climate. It took me a couple of years to work out which ones would grow and flourish here, and it still goes against the grain to plant out bedding plants in November knowing they'll survive the winter and die out when it gets too hot. In the UK they get planted out around May, bloom all summer, and die out when the first frost comes in october or so.

They're soming up quite nicely. I've never tried to grow flowers, except for pots of african violets, which I overwatered.

I understand your discomfort with planting "out of season" I'm discovering quite a bit of that needs to be done here.
